Anyone take Abeka Academy curriculum for homeschooling and been accepted to a college other than PCC?

I am in high school right now and am homeschooling with Abeka Academy curriculum . I was wondering if anyone has been accepted in a college besides Pensacola Christian College? If so, please give what college you were accepted by and what you majored in. Thanks

Hey! I loved using Abeka. I think it helped me out sooo much.

I'm a senior in high school right now and I'm accepted into many schools. Hardvard, Princeton, Yale, Cambridge and etc. You know, schools are actually trying to recruit homeschoolers because they know what kind work dilligence they have. I plan to major in Psychology and PCC doesn't offer that.

Abeka curriculum is accredited in the state of Florida. You should have no issues getting into any college if u r doing the DVD option. of course this is dependent on your transcripts

I have loads of friends who home schooled with Abeka and are now enrolled in University of Toledo, which is a pretty decent school in Ohio.

I need some advice for homeschooling a dyslexic child?

My child was diagnosed with ADD. The public schools actually told me they could not teach her and kept pushing higher doses of medication. Since we've been homeschooling things have vastly improved but we've reached a wall. Some simple things seem to never reach grade level or cannot be grasped despite repetition and various instruction attempts. Looking for an answer I discovered that her ADD symptoms are also Dyslexia symptoms. In fact my whole family has these symptoms and they more closely follow the model for dyslexia than they do ADD. We may have been treating the wrong disorder all along. This so explains why certain teaching methods did not work for teachers or for me. My question is: What now? We are looking into more definite diagnosis. Even the public schools in Kentucky refuse to test for dyslexia and do not view it as a learning disorder. We're already using Time4learning, Spelling City, Brain pop etc to help her bypass some of her issues, but how do we address them?

Thanks in advance for any and all constructive help. Those of you who remember me know we don't have alot of support in our educational endeavors.

www.linguisystems.com has a lot of great material for dyslexia. We use their products often. They have a book called "The Source for Dyslexia" - one of the best books I've EVER read. It really helped me out a lot.

Math U See was the best math program we found for my daughter. It seemed to work well with her dyslexia.

Check around for books addressing the link between add and nutrition. Watch out for sites pushing a particular product, but look for more general research on diet, vitamins, amino acids, etc. Drop me a line for other suggestions along those lines.

Sounds like some backward school system, not being able to read correctly seems like a learning disorder to me.

Can't help alot with learning strategies unfortuantly.

here's a tip I learned when I used to tutor a dyslexic person in school... Use red film (like a clear red report cover) over whatever they're reading.

The person I tutored said that this helped them see the words regular...

something about tricking the part of your brain that responds to written text... If not red try other colors because it may be different for others.

Just lay it over say a text book and just move it over....

now for the adhd part try letting your child study like the girl in legally blonde movie.... movement probably helps it stick...

also if they have physical dyslexica say volleyball/baseball for example have them stand on your feet and move their arms exactly how they need to go for muscle memory

Hope this helps

UK question re CRB checks?

Do I need a CRB check when providing a course for children to do with their parents by correspondence...or with the parents checking the work.

The children are over 8 and under 18.

I will not be teaching the children myself only have provided the work. The course is complementary medicine and botany

Thanks

Very unlikely.

CRB helpline is 0870 90 90 844

Yes, you will probably need to be CRB checked. You may not be in the physical proximity of these children but you will have access to the details where they live & what school they attend - you will have access to data about children that others would consider extremely valuable & you'll also need to ensure that you keep it secured, make sure you keep it in a lockable drawer & away from 'public' areas in your house/work place.

Use the number one of the other posters has provided to find out what you need to do.

i know you need an enhanced check if you are training or coming in contact with children or vulnerable adults. i suppose it depends whether in any part of your role you will have contact, if you do i guess you would need to go thought the crb route

A beka K5 curriculum?

What are some good websites to find new/used a beka books or curriculum sales. I live in the S.C. lowcountry, And would like to go to some local conventions etc.

My favorite place to look for books online (Abeka) is www.homeschoolclassifieds.com. I've found a lot there and the prices are usually pretty good.

Hope you find what you are looking for. I have a 4 year old, so I can't give up my K5 stuff yet! :)

eBay.

And if you can get to one of your state's homeschool conventions (usually in the spring sometime) you can usually find some used curriculum materials.

Signing up at online homeschooling site? (basically online school duh.)?

Okay, Like they said you need something papers about signing up

(im 14 i wouldnt remeber that okay)

Some papers, but i've bin homeschooled for 7 years. but now i want to sign up at a online school.

But is there any that are free? and you don't need school something papers?????

any legitimate online school is going to need some kind of proof of what you've done, and if it's any good it's probably going to charge as well.

Honey it sounds like you should do something...

i'm 13 and in connections academy i think thats free

Has anyone done online schooling?

I was just wondering if anyone who has taken online college courses liked/likes it? And how did you go about signing up for it/ how time consuming is it? I have a 5 month old but want to get some schooling in.

I have taken an online college course.. they are great for convenience but some professors will require more work, just depends. For me it's not any more time consuming than spending a couple hours in class each week. So its got its good and bad. Little more work for not having to go to class. You'd register for them just like you would any other college course. You can always go see an adviser too to get you registered.

Where would I start in finding a good homeschooling program online?

For a 7th grader. Any info would be great. Thanks

First, you need to understand that cyber (online) schools are public schools and provide a public school education in your home. They have to follow the same rules and laws as your local public school. In most states they are free to the family because they are public schools and taxpayer funded. They are operated by for-profit private companies.

Homeschooling is when a parent chooses or creates a curriculum and educates their child themselves. The family had no connection to the public school, and only has to follow the state's rules and regulations related to homeschooling. The family receives no funding assistance, and accepts all responsibility for the costs and outcome.

Which are you looking for?

Hello Mrs xx,

YJ came home and said that she should be tutored. I was happy to hear that because this is her decision. Thanks for counselling Yujin today. She told me that I should tell you her decision because she has changed her mind after you had counselled her today.

I would be very pleased if you arrange for her tutoring. Social Study and English would be picked up for her tutoring, wouldn't they? Please let me know if the subjects would be changed.

YJ prefers to take a tutoring at her school. I will definitely pick her up if I can make it; otherwise, she has to walk home. I hope she will be fine walking late in the afternoon alone. Moreover I hope she won't drop out of the tutoring later.

P.S. 1

YJ is going to have a test from Science class this Friday. I am concerning that she might not understand the English instructions on the test. Would you mind if you ask her science teacher to help her a little with the instructions. I hope science teacher would be fine if she asked questions about some English on the test that she doesn't fully understand.

P.S. 2

I don't see her science teacher's Email address on at her school website. I would like to contact with her teacher by Email if I have some time. One day I asked her if her science teacher has Email address. She said that her teacher doesn't use it. I don't fully understand what that means. It would be very convenient if I knew her teacher's Email address.

I look forward hearing from you,

If I was writing this as a native (English) speaker, I would write it thus:

Dear Mrs xx,

Thanks for counselling Yujin today. She came home from school and told me that the two of you had discussed the possibility of some tutoring. I was happy to hear this because it has been entirely her decision. However she has asked me to contact you because she has changed her mind after speaking with you today.

I would be very pleased if you would arrange the necessary tutoring for Yujin. Social Study and English would be the subjects concerned, wouldn't they? Please let me know if these subjects are changed.

I look forward hearing from you,

Yours faithfully

Furthermore I hope the science teacher will not be unduly perturbed if Yujin needs to ask questions about some of the English on the test, in the event that she doesn't fully understand.

it all looks very good apart from you need to put your name at the end before the p.s parts

Are the Jumpstart Pc programs for kids any good?

Has anyone purchased the Jumpstart PC programs for their kids?

I used them when I was a child. This was in the 90's, but from what I understand, the programs haven't changed very much. They were wonderful for me. I always had the program intended for children 1 to 2 grades ahead of me. I wasn't learning much or being challenged at all in the regular classroom, so I played these games at home almost every night to get the stimulation I was lacking. They were a lot of fun and taught me a lot of useful things when I was actually ready to learn them and not a year or two later.

Yes, they are one of the ones I recommend. I've used toddler on up and have always been impressed. One thing I like about them is that the level changes either easier or harder without the child really knowing it. So after so many errors or so many correct answers it will change for that specific activity. The children in my care have loved the JumpStart CD's.

I have jumpstart kindergarden, 1st and 2nd grade. They are great! My 7 year old daughter loves them and they have helped improve her math and reading skills. Hope that helps.

I'm 16 and I still play the Jumstart 1st Grade Classic. I love it.
