Using television to learn reading skills?

Hi everybody, I've finished developing my phonics program for children and it's extremely straightforward: www.minidavinci.com

But it uses DVDs as the main instructional material and I know a lot of parents are hesitant to let their children watch television at a young age.

What do you think? Television for kids, yay or nay?

Using television unsupervised (i.e. as a babysitter) is not advocated.

However, if it is used as an educational tool and discussed after viewing it can teach! This is the reason to advocate PBS!

I know parents who turn off the sound on their television and children watch and read the script on the screen (i.e. as used for the hearing impaired). Many shows have this option on your television.

Unlimited viewing - NO

Limited and supervised viewing - YES :) It's called parenting!

Thanks for advocating reading and phonics.

Well I believe learning to read the old fashioned way and that is reading to your child and going to the library and exposing your child to the written word in books. Some of these little computer prgrams are fine, but in limited amounts. Too much exposure to television tends to decrease their attention span.

Nay. Technology isn't necessary in life in order to have an education.

Actually, studies say that when young children watch tv, they are more prone to developing ADD/ADHD. So, nay.
